Gather together with your household and tune in for the 109th Christmas Mystery Pageant. Bake some cookies, prepare some Wassail, light some candles, and settle in to be a part of FCC's beloved age-old tradition.

The Christmas Mystery takes its name from the mystery plays, or dramas, of Western Europe that began in the early tenth century and flourished well into the 1400s. Our musical-drama is a Christmas Pageant combining the Biblical accounts of the birth of Jesus along with church legends and beloved Christmas carols. It is performed each Advent season on the Sunday before Christmas.

One of the greatest mysteries surrounding this tradition is the identity of those who portray Mary and Joseph! It is a closely-guarded secret of The Mystery Team until the actual presentation, and is a way of honoring a man and a woman for distinguished service to First Congregational Church in the previous year. The entire event is mysterious! With candles, darkness, singing, and the close gathering of many people, it is a beautiful and timeless process of portraying what the 'mystery' of Christmas is all about.

In the drama, the Angel Choir is composed of our young people, and the Seraph - lead angel - is sung by one of FCC’s female vocalists. The Shepherd and Wisemen roles are sung by tenor and bass members of our church community. Usually, cherub-children of the congregation come forward during the song “O Come Little Children” and present a gift of song before the manger – this year, they do it virtually!
