Phonological awareness (PA) is the ability to hear, identify and manipulate units of sounds in spoken language. Phonological awareness activities include manipulating sounds with rhyming, alliteration, syllables, onsets, rimes, and phonemes. Phonological awareness focuses on sounds and not written letters and is the base for all other reading skills.
6 secret steps to developing phonological awareness in kids
1. Count words in different small sentences
Take small sentences from real life or show pictures to kids and ask them to clap or jump on every word.
2. Rhyming
Ask kids to say something rhyming with the picture or word spoken by you.
3. Syllables
Ask kids to find out the syllables with chin bumps method. (Ask kids to put hand under the chin and see how many times chin is coming down on saying the word slowly.)
4. Alliteration
As kids to say the word whose first letter is same as said by you.
5. Onset/rime
Say the words, Show pictures and ask kids to say the word without onset (first consonant or group of consonants) or rime. (rest of the word)
6. Phonemes (to be in last)
Ask individual letter sounds, individual letter sounds in a word, substituting sounds in beginning, middle and end positions, joining the sounds to form words .
