Breathing is an important skill for us whether we play the low or the high D whistle, actually it is important no matter what whistle we play.

There are no rules for how and when to breathe, but there are a number of helpful guidelines. We need to learn to breathe in ways that enable us to play the tune well, not run out of air, and also in ways that enhance our expression of the tune.
