Casio VZ-1 and VZ-10M - Better than Yamaha DX7? (patches and multi-tracked demos)

The Casio VZ-1 and its rack mount sibling VZ-10m were released in 1988 as an answer to Yamaha’s very successful DX line of FM synths. It uses Phase Distortion for ring modulation and waveform generation and Frequency Modulation to generate harmonics.

The voice architecture is similar to the Yamaha DX synthesisers so we have several oscillators that are linked together via an algorithm. Where the DX7 has six oscillators to choose from, the VZ has eight. Each oscillator is part of a module and each module is then arranged in 4 pairs with the option of mixing, ring modulating or phase modulating its waveforms. The output from this can then be sent to the main output, or used to modulate the second module of the following pair.

This architecture allows for some very wild and complex sounds and although rather difficult to program, it’s a super powerful and versatile synthesiser capable of uniquely warm yet cutting timbres. Is it a better synth than its rival, the Yamaha DX7? Only you can decide!
