Teaching as a Leader – As Leaders We Are Also Teachers – BEST Leadership Training Video!!!
Today I want to talk about teaching as a leader. I am sure that some of you will be saying, “I don’t have that leadership skill, and I am not here to teach anyway!” I believe that is the wrong attitude to have and I want to explain why as leaders we are teachers.
Let me ask you a very simple question. What do teach as leader and teachers have in common? Wherever you are in the world, the main thing to retain in answering my question, is that teachers have leadership traits they use to teach you. Starting from the beginning and over the years that you were at school and then perhaps at high education – You were taught something knew that could add to your leadership tools and leadership development.
I am sure that many of you will remember the proverb, “If you give a man fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”. It is no different in leadership qualities.
Remember when I said in a previous video that when I changed companies, in one of the first department meetings.
I would tell them that if anyone did want my position, I would be happy to help them get there. I would use teaching as a leader to teach them what’s important, to give them the leadership skills and the leadership tools they needed to accomplish the task that lay ahead for them.
I can imagine that you might be thinking:
I can’t teach
I don’t like to teach
I don’t want to teach anyone
If your thought is the second two points, then I suggest that you have work to change your attitude to leadership development and perhaps ask the key question of whether you are cut out to be a teaching as a leader, let alone a good or great leader. It is clearly a time of self-reflection of how bad your attitude of leadership is.
To put it simply, with a few examples, if you have children, and as all good parents you want to, or have wanted to use teaching as a leader to show your children all that you knew to help them to grow up and face the world, from skills to manners, to behaviours, to encouraging them in different areas – sports, theatre, arts and crafts – whatever it is or was.
If you do not have children – perhaps you have siblings (brothers and sisters), nieces, nephews, friends, and so on. The same applies – you want to see them succeed and you are willing to show them, encourage them, give them a helping hand.
And if that is not you, then simply think of a leader as teacher you had at school, or wherever. Go outside school if you prefer – someone who taught you ballet; someone who taught you to play the violin, etc. – You get the point!
So, going back to teaching as a leader, by teaching others the knowledge of teacher leadership, leadership skills, and leadership traits they need to succeed, you are sharing something hugely valuable, which people will remember and be grateful for.
What is the key take-aways for you to retain as a leader?

Back to fear of not knowing how to teach, or even being able to teach, the way to approach it, is not to see it in a formal teacher-pupil type situation. Simply find a way of teaching as a leader and how you do it with those who need to have that leadership training and leadership development. Just share. It’s that simple at the beginning until you learn to make it more structured.
For me, the bottom line, is to spend quality time with each member of your team. The key is to find the best way to do that which shows that you want to see them improve. While this is not the only, nor the most important reason to do it, remember that the culture and environment you create leads to the level of retention you will have, as people see and appreciate your leadership style.
