The website of Nippon Telegraph & Telephone (NTT), who operated the Japanese state telephone service at the time when the telephone in the video was produced, says of their No. 4 Automatic Desktop Telephone Set:
"Supporting social activities in Japan's postwar reconstruction period, this telephone set made its appearance in 1950 through Japan's independent technological development. By thoroughly researching what had been inferior acoustic components up to then and making fundamental improvements, it achieved superior call quality that could be described as cutting-edge for its time. In addition to high call quality, it featured a streamline design representing a design improvement as well."

There are those who say that the basis for the design of this curvaceous set was the somewhat more rectilinear Western Electric 302, and there are undeniable similarities. The dial however appears to owe more to Automatic Electric or ATM in the principles of its construction and operation.
This example was made by Oki, one of five manufacturers who co-operated in the design and production of Telephone No.4. Its ivory colour and the name 'Hitachi' on the dial label suggest that this set was used on a private automatic exchange rather than the NTT network.
