This pond heron we spotted in Yercaud lake, is usually found wading through shallow waters and quietly striking at its aqautic prey. They go solitary for prey hunting, and to Native American fishermen, spotting a heron was good luck, leading to a successful fishing trip.

In Egyptian myth, Ra, the sun god, who is called the father of all creation, is represented with the symbol of the heron, while in In Keltic myth the heron is believed to be the reincarnation of the Goddess of waters and lakes.

English writer Henry Williamson, known for his novels on ruralism and wildlife, begins his famous 1927 novel titled, Tarka the Otter, with a description of Old Nog, the heron.

Tarka the Otter has been called the greatest animal story ever written, and the book has been such a great influence on famous Nature writers, so much that, the book has led to the creation of Britain's 290 km long Tarka Trail – a series of footpaths and cyclepaths around Devon.
