When looking at the Trojan’s defense, it’s been challenging for LSU’s staff to get a great handle on what the scheme will look like. Kelly gave great insight into their approach for the coming week.
“It’s hard to [get a good read on USC’s defense] because there are so many transfers,” Kelly said. “We look at a lot of UCLA tape to get structure to help get the structure of the defense and then, because there are so many transfers it’s really hard. We break it down individually and do a deep dive by player and there are a lot of individually talented players, but like anything else, they have to come together as a unit. We’ve relied heavily on the unit that played together at UCLA and expect that they’re going to play together in a similar fashion. Then, know the talents that a lot of these guys bring as individuals.”
USC’s defense last year was one of the worst in the country statistically and similar to LSU, Lincoln Riley made wholesale changes to his staff and hit the portal hard. Safety Kamari Ramsey, cornerbacks John Humphrey and Greedy Vance help headline the defensive turnover and now with all of the changes. Defensive tackle Bear Alexander is another name to know as likely the top returning player from this defense in 2023 and he’ll look to challenge the Tigers’ front line
LSU is tasked with finding answers to what new defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn is bringing this season. After a successful stint at UCLA, Lynn brings his reputation and a new scheme, but has a lot of work to do to slow down the Tigers’ offense featuring quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, wide receiver Kyren Lacy and perhaps the best offensive line in college football.

Louisiana is home to On3’s No. 1 overall prospect in the 2026 class in New Orleans (La.) St. Augustine five-star defensive lineman Jahkeem Stewart.
Stewart has made double-digit visits to campuses from coast-to-coast, and college offers have been rolling in since prior to his freshman season of high school.
The 6-foot-5.5, 270-pound defensive lineman logged 85 tackles, 33 tackles for loss and 20 sacks during his sophomore season in 2023, and the New Orleans native heads into his junior season as one of the most coveted prospects in America.
While National Signing Day is well over a year away for 2026 recruits, the 5-star prospect and Louisiana’s top-ranked recruit could shut things down this fall.
“The commitment may come mid-season,” Clyde Alexander, Stewart’s trainer and mentor tells On3’s Steve Wiltfong.
