ITRI on Wednesday held a conference on grid resilience with its in-house experts and those from Taipower and Delta Electronics. A stable electricity supply becomes more crucial than ever, in the face of an energy-intensive AI boom coupled with increased climate risks. The solution, therefore, begins with strengthening basic infrastructure.

Virtual power plants, resource integration, meaning the optimization of power distribution with mathematical models, allowing users to take part in supply and demand, and energy storage technologies—I believe all these will help toward balancing demand and supply on the grid and achieve the balance needed for resilience.

The association chair Edwin Liu says that grid resilience begins with strengthening the power supply system on all ends. This is especially important in the face of climate risks, such as Typhoon Danas earlier this year, which toppled almost 3,500 utility poles in Southern Taiwan, requiring urgent restoration.

We can recover very quickly from minor trip-ups. Taiwan is a major ICT nation. If we can combine smart grids with our ICT industry and increase Taiwan’s grid resilience, we can turn Taiwan into a demonstration site. Then we can boost our technologies and help the ICT industry export their solutions and break into the international market.

Electricity consumption is projected to grow eight times within five years to exceed 10 billion kilowatt-hours, due to the boom in AI. This is expected to bring tremendous business opportunities. The numbers also affirm the trend, with the power sector generating a record NT$119.5 billion last year.
