Heavens, what a handsome bird! 😍

Today, let me introduce you to a unique gem of Czech avifauna. Have you ever heard of a bird with a crimson-red throat, singing loudly from the tops of shrubs in wet meadows, and rarely seen anywhere in Czechia except in the border mountain ranges? If not, then sharpen all your senses and meet the scarlet rosefinch 🐦

In the Czech Republic, this rare avian visitor is found at the very western edge of its range. It nests very sparsely, and encountering it is definitely something to underline in your diary as an extraordinary experience. It’s about the size of a sparrow, loves open meadows near meandering streams, and draws attention to itself with a sweet call often transcribed in English as “pleased to meet you” 😊

The first recorded nesting of scarlet rosefinches in Czechia was only in 1962, and since their golden age in the 1990s, their numbers have been gradually declining. A real curiosity is that unlike most other migratory songbirds, this rosefinch doesn’t winter in Africa, but in India. From there, it doesn’t return here until late May, and we don’t get to enjoy it for long – by August, it usually disappears again ✈️

To me, the scarlet rosefinch has always felt a bit exotic, since it doesn’t belong to the typical residents of my usual filming territory. I’ve heard its pleasant song a few times in my life, but never in conditions where I could bring back any decent footage. That’s just how it goes with creatures you have to travel for – it’s harder to choose the right weather and suitable filming conditions. But this spring, during a trip to the Eagle Mountains, it finally worked out. So I’d like to thank my friends Matej Dolinay and Matouš Vlček for their lunchtime tease:
“While you were chasing pipits somewhere, we came across a singing rosefinch. And it wasn’t even that shy – ha!”

The very next dawn, by complete chance, I met it too 🥳
