In Maruti Nagar basti near Pune’s Katraj Wonder City, dozens of children start their mornings without schoolbags or uniforms. Because they don’t have Aadhaar cards, they don’t have classrooms to go to.

Twelve-year-old Gauri Suresh Kale sits with her three sisters and five brothers on a wooden bed, pulling out passport-size photographs from a crumpled plastic bag. These are the only records of their childhood, reminders of an attempt, years ago, to get Aadhaar and ration cards. The documents never came through.

Without Aadhaar, the most basic entitlements slip out of reach, from rations to health care, and most visibly, education. In this settlement of 80 huts, there are 63 children between the ages of three and eighteen. None of them have Aadhaar cards. None of them are in school.

Three years ago, Gauri and her friends had stepped into the government school just 500 meters away. Two days later, they were asked to leave. The reason: no Aadhaar.

The Maharashtra Education Department links students to scholarships, free uniforms, and textbooks through Aadhaar. Teachers say they cannot register children without it. This is despite repeated Supreme Court rulings that Aadhaar cannot be made mandatory for essential services like school admissions.
