There are two "Constraint" classes in Maya. One has been around since Maya 1.0, the other one is pretty new and linked to nCloth. We constrain a piece of cloth to an invisible object and create cracks and tears in the cloth by another nConstraint command.

The classic type of constraint is in the Animation menu and deals with mechanics, not dynamics. For example you can constrain a camera to a motion path or create an aim constraint, so one object always aims the other one.

This tutorial uses some examples from both constraint worlds.
