Of Violence and Valor: Four Lectures on The Iliad (Part I)

Описание к видео Of Violence and Valor: Four Lectures on The Iliad (Part I)

Please join us as Yale's Mark Schenker returns to Wilton Library with a 4-part virtual lecture series on Homer’s epic poem The Iliad. As a companion series to the Library program that Mark presented last June on The Odyssey, his lectures will again concentrate on the poem as a literary work of art, and will consider also how it contrasts and harmonizes with The Odyssey as a masterpiece that engages both the destructive force of rage and the enduring power of civilization.

This series is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley.

Each lecture will focus on a six-book portion of the epic’s 24 sections; Mark will be citing the Robert Fagles translation in his presentations. Patrons are encouraged to read, in any translation of their choosing, each portion in advance or to familiarize themselves with the events of the relevant six books in advance of attending each lecture.
