Sword of the Spirit | Armor of God Pt 7 | EP142

In the final episode of our series Armor of God Pt 7: Sword of the Spirit, Walking The Text founder Brad Gray examines how the Bible is our last line of defense. When the battle was raging, a Roman soldier had one last line of defense. It may have been the short sword which was small but good for stabbing. Or it may have been the dagger that could be used in close quarters. Whether it was the sword or the dagger, Paul’s point is clear: God has given us a last line of defense to use in our battle with evil.

And Paul actually tells us that the sword of the Spirit is the word of God. But he uses a very particular Greek word to describe the “word” of God. It’s the Greek word rhema which means “a word that is given.” Sometimes when we’re in the midst of a struggle, the Holy Spirit gives us a word from God. But most of the time, the Spirit reminds us of the words of God we need to hear most.

In fact, you see Jesus fighting like this. When Jesus is tempted by the devil, he quotes Scripture. When he’s confronted by the religious leaders, he quotes Scripture. When he’s in the biggest fight of his life, on the cross, he quotes Scripture. Scripture is our last line of defense.
