The French Gypsy Jazz genre is a musical triumph in itself. Two very different musicians formed the Quintet of the Hot Club of France: a Manouche gypsy, Django Reinhardt, who couldn’t read or write his own language, but had an immense ear and a musical genius, and Stephen Grappelli, a classically trained musician, a fabulous violinist and pianist (and he also played saxophone and accordion), who, among his other duties had to manage Django and his unpredictability, not turning up to sessions and having also to help his friend sort out contracts and all. A great pair of musicians who brought to the world and infectious and eternal form of music….

Here then is a video about getting started with the genre. Bass, guitar (rhythm and solo) and violin. I take about the rhythmic backdrop, the bass, the guitar chords and solo,lines and scales, and demonstrate the tune ‘minor swing’.
