Even as they fight against their fate, the connection between them deepens until they find it difficult to ignore. Christine wonders if her hopes for a happy marriage are too presumptuous, particularly when he had been forced to offer for her in the first place. Alexander must grapple with his own insecurities as he strives to be the husband a woman as worthy as Christine deserves.
