Hello Friends,
I am Dr. Aditya Kulkarni, Robotic & Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal Surgeon and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Expert.
Today we are discussing a very important concern that many patients have:
Why does Hernia Surgery fail?
Why does hernia come back after surgery?
This is a serious and frustrating issue, especially when patients follow all instructions carefully but still experience recurrence. In this video, I will explain the exact reasons behind failed hernia surgery and recurrent hernia.

Why Does Hernia Come Back After Surgery?
Hernia is a weakness in the abdominal wall. The standard treatment involves placing a surgical mesh to strengthen the area and prevent recurrence. With modern laparoscopic and robotic hernia surgery, the recurrence rate is less than 10%. However, factors like weak muscles, obesity, smoking, early gym, or pregnancy, and technical issues like wrong mesh choice, infection control, or poor follow-up can lead to recurrence.
What is a hernia and why does it happen?
A hernia is a weakness in the abdominal wall through which intestines or fat protrude. It is repaired by placing a mesh to strengthen the weak area.
Why does hernia come back after surgery?
In modern laparoscopic and robotic surgery, recurrence is less than 10%. But in some cases, recurrence happens due to patient-related or technical (surgeon-related) factors.
What are the patient-related causes of failed hernia surgery?
Weak abdominal muscles (age-related), obesity, smoking, early heavy lifting or gym, and pregnancy soon after surgery are major factors.
What are the technical/surgeon-related causes?
Wrong choice of mesh/surgery, small mesh size, poor infection control, or lack of proper follow-up can all cause failure.
Can failed hernia surgery be treated?
Yes! With proper evaluation and advanced procedures like abdominal wall reconstruction, robotic repair, and correct mesh placement, failed or recurrent hernias can be successfully managed.
Recurrent or failed hernia surgery can be stressful — but with the right technique and an experienced surgeon, the chances of success are very high.
If you or someone you know is struggling with a failed hernia surgery or recurrent hernia, don’t panic. Proper diagnosis and advanced surgical options can solve this problem.
