The third most destructive wildfire ever in California occurred in January of 2025. The Palisades fire burned 23,707 acres of land around Malibu, Santa Monica, and Los Angeles, destroying 6,833 buildings and killing 12 people. The cause of this fire was discovered to be arson in October of 2025. The second most destructive wildfire to hit the state was the Eaton fire, which also occurred in January of 2025. Eaton wasn’t far from Palisades, located further inland just north of Altadena, Pasadena, and Sierra Madre. It burned 14,021 acres, 9,413 buildings, and killed 19 people. Its cause is under investigation. The most destructive wildfire in the history of California was the Camp fire in November of 2018. The Camp fire engulfed the town of Paradise, burning 153,336 acres of land and destroying 18,804 buildings while killing 85 people. The Camp fire was caused by a downed power line.
