Matera is a city in the southern Italian region of Basilicata with around 60,000 inhabitants and the capital of the province of Matera. The city is the seat of the Archdiocese of Matera-Irsina. Matera is known for its old town, which consists to a large extent of cave settlements - the Sassi. These have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1993. Matera is about 200 km east of Naples and a good 50 km south-west of Bari and north-west of Taranto. The city lies on the karstic plateau of the Murgia above the deep valley of the Gravina di Matera. The municipal area has a share in the Parco Regionale delle Chiese rupestri del Materano. The historic part of Matera is divided into the districts of Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso. The cave settlements in the area are an exceptional example in the Mediterranean area. The area, which has been inhabited since the Neolithic Age, can be considered one of the oldest cities in the world.
The caves were carved into the relatively soft sandstone and tuff. Initially, it was the natural caves that people used as shelter. Since the stone was easy to work with, the dwellings were soon expanded and entire dwellings were dug into the mountain, which were constantly being expanded with additions. The people cut blocks out of the mountain to use them as building material for the porch. The deeper the caves were dug, the more building material was gained and built up as a facade in front of the grotto.
Side by side and on top of each other, a cave city was formed in the rocks over the course of thousands of years, an intricate network of cave dwellings, narrow streets and small squares, with rock churches in between, which together result in a great architectural work of art.
Today the cave dwellings, the "Sassi of Matera" are known worldwide as part of the Unesco World Heritage of Humanity and are under monument protection. By the way, 007 was also a guest in Matera, James Bond - "No time to die" was filmed there. A graveyard scene and romantic scenes with James Bond and Madeleine Swann were filmed here, followed by intense action scenes with a high-speed chase featuring a Triumph motorcycle and Bond's trusty Aston Martin DB5. However, the narrow, winding streets, in which James Bond will still inflict one or two scratches on his Aston Martin, are not the only special feature.
A visit to Matera is definitely worth it and we can heartily recommend it.
