This video, the first of three on the brain's general operating rules, tells about nerve impulse speed and how the brain processes information. Inside the brain, your average nerve impulse travels at something like 50 miles an hour. This slow speed has major implications for brain evolution and how the brain works. Among other things, it means the brain works by processing lots of sensory and other information all at once. This parallel processing sounds a bit like voodoo magic. But it actually is very much like the way human society processes information through the mass media--television, radio, newspapers, and such. We can see that such processing requires extensive initial arrangements for selection, screening, and distribution of information--which helps to explain why we do not find full-fledged parallel processing computers, and also why we humans, with our highly developed parallel processing brains, take such a long time growing up.
