How do These Children's/Educational Watercolors Compare Against Professional Watercolors

Professional watercolors typically have a gum arabic, honey, or proprietary base like Aquazol. They may contain dyes as lake pigments, but they may also contain synthetic and mineral pigments. They may have properties like granulation. Generally, Professional watercolors are more saturated in masstone, and will not 'flood' a wash as much as children's grade will. Professional grade watercolors are not specifically formulated to be washable, and many colors are incredibly staining and will stain skin and clothing. Some pigments are toxic (cadmium, cobalt). Many professional grade watercolors are formulated to be lightfast, meaning it can withstand sunlight without fading (although this is not true for all colors).

If you are just doing watercolor for fun, you may not feel the need to spend money on professional watercolors and that's fine. Children's grade and student grade are often not capable of the same effects and techniques, but you may not need those techniques for you rart or what you are practicing. Some might find these watercolors work well for practicing handlettering in watercolor, or watercolor florals, and that's fine. That said, I would strongly recommend not using children's grade watercolors for art that you intend to sell. If you're selling reproductions, that's fine, but selling originals made with these paints is not a good idea.

Painting with Prang is suitable for mixed-age groups where you're trying to meet a variety of needs, such as younger children and adults. They're going to be easier to clean up and more affordable than student grade or professional grade watercolors, and can do many of the same techniques. I also think these can be great for practicing brush strokes, for journaling, or as an entry point to see if you enjoy watercolor as a medium.

All in all, Prang performed better than I expected, and it's nice to be able to test out and recommend a very affordable, very accessible watercolor option for play and experimentation.
