Located in the county of Somerset, and around eight miles west of Bristol, is the town of Portishead.

The town's name is derived from 'port at the head of the river'. Geographically it is situated along the Severn Estuary near the mouth of the River Avon.

For centuries, Portishead was a fishing port. From the early 19th century it began to develop as a seaside resort. Victorian day trippers were able to reach the town via paddle steamers from Bristol and, later, by rail.

A railway station opened in 1867, but was closed to passengers in 1964 due to the notorious Beeching cuts, and later closed to freight in 1981. Today, public transport to Portishead consists of direct bus services from Bristol, Weston-super-Mare and nearby towns and villages.

Portishead's industrial past includes a deep water dock from the 19th century, and two power stations from the 20th century. The power stations closed in the 1970s and 1980s respectively and the dock has since been converted into a marina lined with apartments.

In 1991 the band known as Portishead formed in Bristol. Producer and band member Geoff Barrow was brought up in the town of Portishead.
