Young designers are using spring steel technology to make familiar objects fold and pop. Spring steel is commonly used in measuring tapes, allowing the metallic ruler to twist, then return to its original shape, while remaining strong.
Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez has used the technology to make a collapsible mop, that can be stored in small spaces.
Ayca Dundar has used it to make an umbrella that has only six main parts, and no spokes. Both are design students who have just graduated from the Royal College of Art.
