As the mountain passes prepare to bow to winter’s first snow, we set out on a daring journey from Manali to Umling La, the world’s highest motorable pass, in Eastern Ladakh. Braving November’s chill, with roads still open but snow forecasts looming, our ambitious plan spanned breathtaking landscapes, high-altitude challenges, and the magic of Ladakh.

Day 1 began with a predawn start from Manali, traversing four majestic mountain passes: Baralacha La, Nakee La, Lachung La, and Pologongka La. Each pass offered its own spectacle, from snow-dusted peaks to barren beauty, as we made our way toward Hanle. Along the route, the dry yet surreal landscape of Tso Kar Lake greeted us with its salty charm, while the colorful mountains of Chumathang painted a mesmerizing backdrop to our journey.

The drive along the Indus River was spellbinding, with its majestic flow flanked by vivid hues that seemed airbrushed onto the terrain. Dust storms added a raw touch of nature’s power as we navigated this remote region of Eastern Ladakh.

Despite an expected 12-hour grind, we reached Hanle by 4 PM, much ahead of schedule. Finding accommodation proved tricky with most homestays shut due to freezing temperatures and inoperable facilities. Fortune smiled, and we secured a cozy room with a diesel heater at Padma Lodge.

Settling in, we rested, ready for Day 2’s ambitious target: a crack-of-dawn departure for Umling La via Photi La, the sixth-highest mountain pass. This journey promised to be as thrilling as it was treacherous.
