On March 24, 1945, during the longest escort mission of the war—over sixteen hundred miles round trip—Davis and his squadron of red-tailed P-51 Mustangs flew deep into German airspace to protect B-17 bombers striking a tank factory near Berlin. Midway through the mission, a German Me 262 jet pilot—flying the most advanced fighter of WW2—attempted a surprise attack on the bomber formation. Believing the Black pilots wouldn't hold discipline or geometry under fire, he miscalculated. Davis broke protocol and used pure instinct and geometry to intercept the jet head-on. The German pilot panicked and broke off. The bombers survived. Davis returned to base—uncelebrated, segregated, and unshaken. This mission was a tactical masterpiece in the skies—and a brutal reminder of the racial contradictions on the ground.
