Whenever we eat, our body naturally produces acid to help break down food. Normally, our kidneys filter out this acid to maintain a healthy pH balance. But when kidney function gets weak, this acid starts building up inside the body, a condition called metabolic acidosis. This not only affects overall health but also speeds up kidney damage. In today’s video, Dr. Puru Dhawan will explain how metabolic acidosis affects creatinine levels, worsens kidney function, and what steps you can take to manage it effectively.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝗶𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗕𝗼𝗱𝘆

Acid helps in digestion — it’s part of how our body processes food. Healthy kidneys remove this extra acid through urine. That’s why urine is slightly acidic.
But when kidneys don’t function properly, this acid stays in the body and causes metabolic acidosis, which becomes dangerous over time.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗞𝗶𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆𝘀

When creatinine is under 3, kidneys usually manage to remove waste and acids. But when creatinine rises above 4, the kidneys struggle to filter waste, and acid starts piling up.
This buildup leads to metabolic acidosis, which puts more stress on the kidneys. As a result, kidney function drops even faster and creatinine levels go up.

𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗪𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗕𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲

Using raw baking soda (sodium bicarbonate powder) is not recommended. Instead, bicarbonate tablets are prescribed for easier and safer use. Doctors recommend a serum bicarbonate test to determine if your acid levels are high. If your level is below 22 and your creatinine is going up, taking bicarbonate tablets may help slow down kidney damage.
