Barbershops and salons in one of the coronavirus hot spots in New York City are open for business as the city enters phase 2. Despite reopening, some owners say the restrictions imposed will make it hard to pay the rent.
"I felt so, so happy to reopen the business. But I'm worried, too," Lourdes Salazar, owner of Tu S'tilo Salon Spa said.
Salazar has been in business for seven years in the Corona section of Queens, a neighborhood which had one of the city's greatest concentrations of COVID-19 cases. To reopen Salazar said she had to reduce her staff and is only able to perform servives related to hair styling.
"Fifty percent of my job is the nails. I can not do the nails now," Salazar said. "I can do only hair. So I don't think we are gonna do a lot of money for pay the rent only with the hair."
More than a dozen babershops and salons dot a quarter mile stretch along Corona's business district.
"It's a little crazy, you know, just getting readjusted, you know, having all these dividers, making sure every employee and staff member has masks, Chastacide (a disinfectant used by babsershops), alcohol," Jose Corona, owner of Corona Barbershop Plus said.
The virus has been blamed for over 22,000 New York City deaths, with the toll down to single and low double digits in recent days. Infections have plummeted from an early-April peak, but an average of about 250 people a day still have tested positive over the past two weeks, city data show.
While most have signs posted advising clients to wear masks, a lot of babershops are not taking walki-in. People who are in need of a hair cut must call ahead for an appointment.
