Today is Rift Day. If ever there was a day to talk about rifts. President T created a giant rift today in Davos at the World Economic Forum. And chapter 1 of my book, "The Missing Brotherhood," puts the spotlight on a rift in the Buddhist brotherhood that occurred in India in 253 BC.

This video delves into how this Buddhist rift formed. The result was that the Buddhist patriarch selected a group of monks and sent them to bring Buddha's teachings beyond India. This is the first time in history for such a thing.

We also set some important background and context of India in this era. It was just a few centuries after Buddha passed on. It was a time of the expanding Mauryan Empire, the largest and most powerful empire in the world at the time -- thanks in big part to King Ashoka's grandfather Chandragupta Maurya. Chandragupta and India stopped Alexander the Great of Macedonia from expanding any further, because they were far more powerful than the fickle army of Alexander. After India's show of force, Chandragupta usurped India's King Dhana Nanda and began uniting tribal nations across India. India became more powerful and more rich.

Ashoka expanded India too. But Ashoka's great gift to the world was state-sponsorship of Buddhism. This resulted in the great rising of Buddhism. But with that rapid rise came a rift. Then, from the rift, monks were sent to take Buddha's teachings beyond India and into other parts of the ancient world.
