In this short math video we will answer a standardized math test question where we are asked to find the area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths. We will review the formulas for finding the area of a rectangle - A=b x h and A = l x w. I will review the Commutative Property of Multiplication which states the order in which you multiply to number values does not change the product. We will identify the base and height of the rectangle and understand that these sides are interchangeable with each other and length and width. We will rewrite the formula using the fractional side lengths. We will write the mixed numbers as improper fractions. We will multiply the fractions and write the product as a mixed number. An exemplar solution is modeled and explained.

Find the area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths by tiling it with unit squares of the appropriate unit fraction side lengths, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths. Multiply fractional side lengths to find areas of rectangles, and represent fraction products as rectangular areas.
