They are the last hope for many childless couples from all over Europe: Ukrainian surrogate mothers. Since 2010, they have given birth to children of wealthy clients. How does this business on the desire to have a child work? "Re:" visits the world-famous fertility clinic BioTexCom and meets with surrogate mothers who are self-confident about why they are selling their bodies.
They are the last hope for many childless couples from all over Europe: Ukrainian surrogate mothers. Moreover, surrogacy is prohibited in Germany and other countries. And for people willing to become parents, this is almost a bargain: if a child costs 150,000 euros or more in the United States, it will be much cheaper in Ukraine.
How does a business based on the desire to have a child work? Bettina Vobst, the author of the film "RE Reportage" travels to Ukraine, visits a fertility clinic and meets two surrogate mothers. With the help of the received money, Olena fulfilled her desire to buy an apartment for herself and her son Nikita. Now she works as an intermediary for surrogate mothers. Yulia, 30, lives in a village and wants to finally leave her parents' small house together with her husband and daughter. She says there is little work for young women outside the cities.
The reportage monitors how the child born to Julia is being transferred to its genetic parents Jens and Denis. A German couple tells about their unsuccessful attempts to have a child through artificial insemination and how they found a way out through surrogacy. Ukrainian lawyer Sergei Antonov covers the critical aspects of the business on the desire to have a baby.
