But I have hands that can work, and now I have a building full of things people used to pay money for. Copper wiring. Brass fixtures. Slot machines that might still be worth something to collectors. This is my chance."
"This is suicide." But Maria's voice had softened, the fight draining out of her. She looked at Sofia, who stood solemn and quiet, too used to adult problems. "At least let me take Sofia. She can stay with me and Carlos while you do whatever crazy thing you're planning."
