An Island County man is facing up to a year in jail after refusing to wear a mask in an election center.

Tim Hazelo was charged with two crimes over a dispute about the county auditor's mask mandate in the election office while he tried to observe the ballot counting process last fall.

The case went to trial this week, and a jury heard a day of testimony before delivering their verdict Thursday afternoon.

This all stems from an incident on November 4, 2024, at the Island County Elections office, where Hazelo tried to observe the ballot counting process without a mask.
