July 12 marks the ninth anniversary of Tulku Tenzin Delek Rinpoche’s death in a Chinese prison. Tenzin Delek Rinpoche was a respected lama and environmentalist whose philanthropic work in building schools, hospitals, old-age homes, and religious institutions, as well as reviving Tibetan monasteries, irked Chinese authorities and led to his unlawful detention. He died while serving a life sentence on July 12, 2015, in Chengdu. He is one of many Tibetan political prisoners serving time in prison on fabricated, trumped up charges. We sat down with Tenzin Dawa, director of TCHRD, and Nyima Lhamo, niece of Tulku Tenzin Delek, to discuss custodial deaths in Chinese prisons.
