The Kew Cottages Fire | Historical Disaster Stories

The Kew Lunatic Asylum is a decommissioned mental institution in the Melbourne suburb of Kew. Kew was one of Australia's largest asylums, and it was open from 1871 to 1988. The Kew Children's Cottages were first opened in 1887 as the Kew Asylum's "Idiot Ward."

On April 8, 1996, at approximately 10.49 p.m., a male occupant set fire to bedding in a room he shared with two other residents for reasons unknown. The flames grew significantly during the next seven minutes, producing choking, deadly smoke throughout the building. The two night workers, who were in charge of the unit , were completely oblivious of the impending disaster of what was to come. The fire department were notified by an automatic alarm and were on the scene just 12 minutes after the resident initially lit the fire but it was already too late.
