At 19:00 hrs on 15 July 2023 we passed Cabo Carvoeiro, the second most Western point of mainland Europe.

The main hazard in that region is the fishing buoys. Followed by a very strong surge that is driving your towards the rocks. And the 3rd hazard is sailing vessels who have calculated their passage to gybe just before they go around the headland. The passage around the headland is very narrow as there is an island Berlengas on the 50m contour so the space around the headland is relatively narrow and all sailing vessels gather in that small space. Two of them passed us very close on the stern while they were gybing and got us very worried.

We sailed around the headland on F5 and despite that the waves were choppy and rolling. It’s not a nice place to be at but it wasn’t as bad and as dangerous as Finisterre.
