Equity in Biomedicine Seminar: Honoring Henrietta Lacks’ Legacy (Highlights)

In this highlights video of an Equity in Biomedicine (EBM) seminar, Rebecca Skloot, author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and Jeri Lacks-Whye, Henrietta Lacks’ granddaughter discuss the legacy of Henrietta Lacks and HeLa cells with Broad's Ayanah Dowdye, Foxy Robinson, and Bill Sellers.

This EBM event was jointly organized by Shades@Broad, A4C@Broad, Bioethics@Broad, Count Me In, and the Cancer Program to celebrate and honor the life of Henrietta Lacks.

Speakers:

Jeri Lacks-Whye is the granddaughter of Henrietta Lacks and the daughter of Henrietta’s middle son David “Sonny” Lacks. Jeri has visited dozens of campuses and communities around the country, sharing her perspective on the legacy of Henrietta Lacks and the HeLa cells. She continues to keep her grandmother’s legacy alive while using her family’s story as a platform to address national issues including preventative healthcare, health disparities, literacy, and community trust. Jeri is one of three family members on the National Institutes of Health panel that oversees HeLa genome research applications. Jeri continues to curate The Lacks Family Collection, with artifacts from accolades honoring her grandmother's life and legacy, and also co-founded CELLebrate Henrietta Lacks.

Rebecca Skloot is the renowned author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, which tells the story of Henrietta Lacks and her descendants. The Immortal Life was selected as a "Best Book of 2010" by over 60 media outlets, including The New York Times and the Boston Globe. It spent more than four years on The New York Times bestseller list and was also made into an Emmy-nominated HBO film starring Oprah Winfrey as Deborah Lacks and Rose Byrne as Skloot.

Rebecca has a BS in biological sciences and an MFA in creative nonfiction. She is the founder and president of the Henrietta Lacks Foundation, which strives to provide financial assistance to needy individuals who have made important contributions to scientific research without their knowledge or consent.

Moderators:

Foxy Robinson is a Research Associate and Biomedical Post-Baccalaureate Scholar at the Broad Institute's Cancer Program (https://www.broadinstitute.org/cancer). Her work investigates mutations found in patients with biliary tract cancer. She's interested in developing targeted therapies for chronic diseases facing underrepresented communities.

Ayanah Dowdye is a Clinical Research Coordinator for the Metastatic Prostate Cancer project at Count Me In (https://joincountmein.org/). She has a vested interest in community engagement efforts, particularly as it pertains to historically underrepresented and underserved communities.

Opening Remarks:

Bill Sellers (https://www.broadinstitute.org/bios/w...) is a core institute member at the Broad and serves as director of the institute's Cancer Program. He is also a faculty member at Harvard Medical School, and faculty member and senior advisor to the president for experimental therapeutics at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He is a distinguished cancer scientist, with deep experience in cancer biology and cancer therapeutics.

The Equity in Biomedicine (EBM) is an institute-wide interactive meeting that focuses on critical issues related to equity and representation in biomedical research, especially as it applies to genomics research and precision medicine. Speakers dive into the equal or unequal social implications of their work: Who is affected? How are they affected? Why? The overall goal of this series is to foster discussions about equity and inspire Broad scientists and trainees to reflect on the social impact of their own research.
