Hello! This is Rhett DeMille, the owner and president of PalmettoSoft. In this video I am going to share a little bit about the process of keyword research for SEO.

What is Keyword Analysis?

Keyword analysis is a process of looking at and analyzing search terms to figure out which ones are the best fit for an SEO campaign.

Example, if you own a signage manufacturing business, keyword research (analysis) can help you find keywords like "sign company near me," "sign board installer in Florida," etc.

Why is Keyword Analysis Important for SEO?

Here are five reasons why every SEO and digital marketer should put keyword research at the top of their list when creating new content or starting a new SEO campaign.

Find out what people are looking for online
Know how your competitors are doing
Find content opportunities with low competitive keywords
Understand search intent
Come up with new ideas for content

How Many Types of Keywords are There in SEO?

Based on our experiences over the years, we consider six MAIN types of keywords:

National keywords
Local keywords
Long-tail keywords
Branded keywords
Informational keywords
E-commerce keywords

It is very important to know what kinds of keywords to use if you want to reach the customers you are most interested in contacting.

How To Do Keyword Analysis for SEO for a Website

It is not uncommon to do three or four rounds of keyword research with the customer.

Anecdotal Tip: Good keyword input tends to equal better keyword output in research reports.

Keywords should never be selected by the SEO provider without the client’s input and ultimate approval.

Here are a few more things to keep in mind when you do keyword research:

Add closely related keywords on one page
Look at Google’s instant search result section
Find commonly asked questions in the “People also ask” section of Google SERP

Highly competitive keyword (generic)

Example: Your company sells imitation alligator handbags for women. The term you target is “handbags.” You notice the search volume is 25x larger than the other keywords and you jump on it.
Takes a tremendous amount of money
Consumes lots of time
When and if the term gets a first-page ranking, 97% of your inbound traffic is non-qualified. Now you have another problem for your business!

Smart Tip

If possible, target long-tail keywords over generic keywords
During the keyword selection steps, always collaborate with the client.
