Dharun Ravi stood trial following allegations that he invaded the privacy of his Rutgers University roommate, Tyler Clementi, by secretly using a webcam to view a private, consensual encounter between Clementi and another individual.
Evidence presented at trial showed that on the evening of September 19, 2010, Ravi positioned a webcam in the shared dormitory room and later viewed the footage with another student. Ravi subsequently posted public messages on social media referencing what he had observed.
Court records established that Clementi became aware of these posts the following day. On September 22, 2010, Clementi left messages online indicating severe distress and later went to the George Washington Bridge.
The trial, held in 2012, examined issues of privacy rights, bias intimidation, and the use of technology to publicly expose private conduct. Ravi was convicted on multiple counts, including invasion of privacy, bias intimidation, and evidence tampering, and was sentenced to jail time, probation, community service, a fine, and mandatory counseling.
In September 2016, a three-judge appellate panel overturned the convictions following changes to New Jersey’s bias intimidation statute, which was later ruled unconstitutional. While the convictions were vacated, the judges strongly criticised Ravi’s conduct, condemning the transformation of a private act into a public spectacle and noting the broader moral implications within a university setting.
