Nearly half of Muslim students in Tennessee say they have been bullied because of their religion, according to a statewide report released Tuesday by the American Muslim Advisory Council (AMAC).
The survey of Muslim families and students found 46% of children reported experiencing faith-based bullying. 68% said teachers rarely intervened.
AMAC's report also found:
Three in four parents said they did not know whether their children had been bullied.
13% of students reported that teachers or school administrators made offensive comments about Islam at least monthly.
37% said adults at school had made them feel uncomfortable because they are Muslim.
“No child should feel unsafe or unwelcome in school because of their faith,” said Sabina Mohyuddin, AMAC’s executive director.
