The Treasury Department is discontinuing the controversial verification software ID.me due to concerns about the company's use of facial recognition technology.

Last year, the IRS announced requiring taxpayers who file taxes online to register at ID.me. This would allow them to verify their identity using a video selfie.

This summer, this program was available for all IRS services, including online payments and access to tax credits.

People who are worried about ID.me say that private companies could get access to many biometric data if the service is used.

Blake Hall, CEO of the company, admitted that the company matches faces against a more comprehensive database than images of the same face.

Numerous lawmakers on both sides of this issue have spoken out, including Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), which revealed that the Treasury Department plans to eliminate ID.me.

Wyden stated Monday that the Treasury Department made the intelligent decision of directing the IRS to discontinue using the controversial ID me verification system, as requested by Wyden earlier today. While I understand that this transition may take some time, I appreciate that the administration acknowledges the importance of privacy and security. No one should consent to facial recognition to access essential government services.

Last week, the Senate Finance Committee received a letter from the IRS expressing concern over the ID.me partnership.

Commissioner Chuck Rettig stated that the IRS understands the concerns raised about ID.me in a statement posted on the IRS website.

He said, "Everyone should feel secure with how their data is secured."
