The Government Employees Medical Scheme says it is shedding 22 billion rands a year to fraudulent claims. The company revealed that the most fraud was committed by pharmacies in remote areas billing GEMS for high-cost medication only. Other culprits include dieticians and physios billing for services not rendered, collusion between patients and their doctors, and billing for services that were not medically needed.
