In response to a critique from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), in the wake of the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, the Maryland Transportation Authority is revealing plans for safety measures to protect the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

The state commissioned a risk assessment of the bridge last year. The NTSB had admonished the state for not doing one sooner and claimed that had a risk assessment been done for the key bridge and its findings implemented, the bridge collapse may have been prevented.
