Listen to the calm sounds of waves crashing on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

The North East coast of Australia is a fascinating part of the world where two UNESCO World Heritage sites meet: the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics region of Queensland. Exploring this part of the world is not without its perils given Australia's sometimes extreme fauna, but the potential rewards are massive.

On my recent expedition there I had ample opportunity to immerse myself in these landscapes and to take in the soundscapes. I drove around the Wet Tropics coast on tarmac roads and on gravel tracks for days on end. I climbed jungle hills and walked on beautiful sandy beaches, stopping every now and then and taking in the sounds. Fortunately I did not run into any crocodiles or other dangerous fauna.

The more developed parts of this region are a lost cause for nature sound recording. The uniqueness and popularity of the area makes this a very attractive location for holidaymakers. Road and sea traffic is almost constant, and at night the sound of distant generators is impossible to get away from.

I had to leave the tarmac and venture onto the much rougher jungle tracks before I could even consider recording soundscapes there. After a few river crossings and very steep hills I began to properly scout for sound recording. I left the car on the side of the road and ventured into the bush, carefully and slowly so I wouldn't take any angry fauna by surprise.

After a but of bush whacking and rock climbing I managed to get to an immense beach that went on for as far as I could see. I walked up and down until I found a place where the high tides would not reach my kit, and then set up a drop rig at the edge of the forest. My aim was to capture the sonic place where these two incredible biotopes meet - the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach meeting insects and birds calling in the bush at night. It's a magical thing to experience even without the smell and visuals. Do you think I've achieved that? Enjoy!
