Traditional Banyan Tree

Banyan tree has been a symbol of shelter or hope since ancient times.
It is the oldest tree in the Bengali-speaking region.
The shade of a Banyan tree is compared to the affection of parents.
Markets take place under the Banyan tree.
The music session is held.
During festivals, various ceremonies are held around the Banyan tree.
Many people bind red threads to the branches of Banyan trees and worship them.
Farmers, passersby, or shepherds seek cool shade under the Banyan trees in the scorching sun.
Banyan trees not only offer shade to people but also provide birds with food and habitats.
Numerous birds, mammals, and insects depend on the fruit of the banyan tree.
It is a favorite shelter of vultures or similar kinds of birds.

Banyan is an evergreen tree.
Leaves are thick, smooth, bright green, and egg-like.
New leaves grow in the spring and autumn.
Young leaves are copper in color.
Fruit ripens in summer, monsoon, and winter.
Banyan fruit is small and round in shape.
It turns red when ripe.
Ripe Banyan fruit is a favorite food of Crows, Bats, and Mynas.
Banyan flowers are pollinated by a specific insect species.
Birds consume the fruit and disperse the seeds all over.
These bird-borne seeds grow easily on building cornices, cracks in old buildings, and other tree sockets.
The aerial roots descend as the Banyan tree grows.
These aerial roots enter the soil, grow into stems, and prevent soil erosion.

Banyan trees play a vital role in maintaining the environmental balance.
A Banyan tree lives for 400 years on average.
This tree relatively takes in more carbon dioxide and releases oxygen.
A Banyan tree reportedly releases 50 to 70 gallons of water vapor on average per day, which regulates the humidity of the local area.

The Banyan tree is a tradition of Bengal.
It provides shade, food for animals, and more oxygen than other plants.
Also, the medicinal benefits of Banyan bark, leaves, fruits, roots, and gum are priceless in Ayurvedic treatment.
But sadly, the number of Banyan trees is now declining.
The number of Banyan trees is declining due to road widening, urbanization, Banyan tree felling, and lack of sapling planting.
To maintain the balance of the environment, everyone should be proactive in conserving Banyan trees.
