A fellow Ham operator brought his Omni VII over with a broken Multi Function encoder. I thought a replacement would be available, nope. I found many forums with folks on the search for this magical component. I e-mailed Ten Tec service dept direct, no response. So, I decided to search out an alternative. I located an encoder with the proper footprint for the PCB. It has the proper counts, built in pushbutton, etc. The main issue was the shaft length was 5mm short. So, the part would require modification for the knob to install. I found some 6mmx6mm spacers. Made holding jigs to maintain alignment. The spacer is epoxy & pinned in place. Also, the encoder is disassembled and the detent mechanism is removed. It is a lengthy process, but the end result, regaining the knob function! I do not know of other models that use this style encoder. To determine that, I would either need good pictures or get the radio here so it can be inspected. I normally stick to tube type equipment, after performing this brain surgery, I appreciate the older tech much more! NOTE: This was a custom application, Not a stocked D-lab item. They will be built to order. The process takes a few days. So please keep that in mind if you decide to order one.
