Boston School of Painters Presentation & Demo
The Boston School of Painters refers to a group of artists working under a common influence of shared ideals and standards in Boston at the turn of the century. The most famous of the original Boston painters were Joseph R. DeCamp (1858-1923) Edmund C. Tarbell (1862-1938, Frank W. Benson (1862-1951) and William M. Paston (1869-1941).
These artists looked back to earlier times, to the paintings of the Dutch masters, especially Vermeer, for inspiration. They believed in the disciplined training of drawing. The artist, rendered accurately, the subject in a full range of light to dark values.
Gayle Levèe studied with Robert Douglas Hunter, himself a student of R.H. Ives Gammell.
