The Closed Catalan is a much calmer way of fighting white's fianchetto system. Instead of taking the gambited c4 pawn, black simply develops his kingside and brings his king to safety, and then proceeds to do the same thing on the other side of the board.

The opening is far less risky than the Open Catalan positions. It's very positional in nature, and it requires the player to be familiar with various different systems and pawn structures.
