Attorneys representing the family of George Floyd announced a wrongful death civil lawsuit against the City of Minneapolis and its four former police officers following Floyd's death.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, attorney Benjamin Crump said they are seeking to set a precedence to make it financially prohibited that the police won't "willfully kill, marginalize people, especially Black people, in the future."

He railed against the City of Minneapolis, saying the City has a history of policies and procedures and "deliberate indifference when it comes to the treatment of arrestees, especially Black men, that cries out for training and discipline."

George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minn., on Memorial Day. Floyd died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes while other officers pinned him to the ground. Floyd’s death sparked weeks of global protests against anti-Black racism and police brutality.

The suit names as defendants the city of Minneapolis and four officers who participated in his arrest on suspicion of using a counterfeit $20 at a grocery store. It seeks money for compensatory, special, and punitive damages from the officers and compensatory and special damages from the city.

Derek Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter. Thomas Lane, J. Kueng and Tou Thao are charged with aiding and abetting both second-degree murder and manslaughter.
