You don’t have to get a degree at the end to deduct something as continuing education. Want to learn more? Here’s how to write off education expenses for work.

If you work for yourself, you’ve got to keep your skills sharp. Whether your keeping your license current, mastering new tech, or just staying one step ahead of the competition, learning more about your industry definitely pays off in the long run.

Of course, all that self-improvement doesn’t come cheap. That’s why the IRS let’s self-employed people write off work-related education expenses on their taxes.

Here’s what a lot of freelancers, independent contractors, and small business owners might not know: you don’t need to get a piece of paper to take this deduction. Even without a degree or a certificate, honing your job skills (or learning new ones) can help you save on your taxes — as long as you follow the IRS’s rules for continuing education.

To write something off as a work-related education expense, it has to help you maintain or improve your job skills or be required by law to keep doing your job. (That’s why food safety certifications for chefs are 100% deductible!) Your education also has to be related to your current job — not a job you wish to do in the future. (An aspiring software engineer, for example, couldn’t write off an intro coding course.)

Once you know the rules, the whole world of work-related education write-offs is open to you. And it’s probably much wider than you think.

Degree-granting courses are eligible if they’re related to your work, and so are self-paced, skill-based courses like the ones you’d find on Udemy and Skillshare. But don’t forget about other education expenses like trade magazines, premium podcast subscriptions, books, and more!
