Today we’re heading up into the mountains with our young mule, Cedar, for what may be her very last ride with us. Cedar came into our lives a little over two years ago after a traumatic experience left her fearful of saddles, cinches and being worked with. She had a bad bucking issue and a lot of fear. We knew she needed a soft place to land, and while we weren’t exactly looking for another project at the time, we felt we could help her.
It’s been a slow, steady journey, but Cedar has come a long way. She’s gone from a worried mule to one that quietly stands tied at the trailer, packs weight in the mountains, and moves with a newfound confidence. While it’s always bittersweet to say goodbye, we’ve found her a wonderful new home where she’ll be set up for success.
In this video, we pack Cedar for the day, ride into the backcountry, and reflect on how far she’s come. Helping equines like her isn’t our livelihood, but every so often one comes into our life for a reason—just like Cedar did.
